In the spotlight…. Midwife
Long associated with the figure of the midwife, the profession of midwifery is one of the oldest forms of healthcare. Initially based on empirical knowledge passed down within communities, it gradually became more formalised from the 17th century onwards thanks to the emergence of structured training programmes. Subsequently, the medicalisation of the 19th and 20th centuries marked a decisive turning point, integrating the profession into the modern healthcare system and thereby contributing to the reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality. Far more than a mere technical role, midwifery embodies a vocation in which the human being remains at the heart of a complex and fascinating reality that we shall explore through the career of Rémy Bekono.
