A deadly road accident along the Mutengene–Buea road in the Southwest Region has left several people feared dead and many others injured, following a violent collision involving multiple vehicles and motorbikes.
The crash occurred late Sunday, May 3, when a truck belonging to Source du Pays reportedly lost control and rammed into traffic along the busy stretch. Witnesses say the truck ploughed into more than ten vehicles and over fifteen motorbikes, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, several deaths have been reported, and many of the injured are currently receiving treatment in nearby health facilities.
Tensions escalated on Monday morning after residents discovered that the suspected truck had been removed from the scene overnight under unclear circumstances. The move has raised concerns across the area, with many questioning why a key piece of evidence was taken away before any official communication.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes immediately after the crash, with wrecked cars and motorcycles littering the road. Some residents have dismissed initial suggestions of brake failure, instead accusing the driver of excessive speed and reckless driving – an issue they say is common among heavy-duty trucks operating on the route.
The removal of the vehicle has intensified calls for transparency, with locals demanding a thorough and independent investigation into the cause of the crash. As of now, authorities have not released an official statement, and the death toll remains uncertain.
Residents are also urging the government to strengthen road safety enforcement on the Mutengene–Buea road and hold those responsible accountable.
