Chinese investors have presented a CFAF 45.2 billion zircon mining and processing project for Cameroon’s East Region, with plans to create about 500 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs through the development of an integrated extraction and mineral transformation chain.
The project was presented during a meeting between the Acting Director General of the Investment Promotion Agency, IPA, and a delegation of Chinese investors from Hongji SA. The proposed investment centers on the extraction, processing and first transformation of zircon before export.
According to the IPA, the initiative will be implemented in two phases following the identification of zircon deposits in the East Region. The first phase will focus on mining operations, while the second will involve processing and initial transformation of the mineral within Cameroon before shipment to international markets.
The promoters say they are already holding discussions with the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, MINMIDT, and the National Mining Corporation, SONAMINES, to obtain the authorizations required to begin mining activities.
According to the IPA, the project reflects increasing interest from international investors in Cameroon’s mining sector. The agency said the initiative highlights the country’s mineral potential and ongoing efforts to promote resource transformation and industrial development.
The investors are expected to work closely with the IPA during the implementation phase, particularly for the establishment of processing facilities and investment procedures.
