Cameroon Opens Public Review of Environmental Impact for Edéa Quarry Project

Cameroon’s Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development has announced public hearings on the environmental and social impact assessment for a planned stone quarry in Apouh, in the Edéa I district of the Sanaga-Maritime division.

The project, led by Société camerounaise d’exploitation minière Lan Jin Sarl, is being submitted for review by local communities in line with national environmental regulations.

According to an official statement signed on April 14, 2026, in Yaoundé by Minister Delegate Dr. Nana Aboubakar Djalloh, the hearings will take place from April 27 to May 2 at the Apouh traditional chiefdom.

The process will include a public reading room where residents can access the full impact assessment reports, along with registers to collect comments, opinions, and recommendations from affected communities.

The aim is to ensure that environmental and social concerns are properly addressed, particularly in areas such as natural resource management, ecosystem protection, and the project’s socio-economic impact on nearby populations.

The ministry has called on local residents and stakeholders to take part actively in the process, describing it as a key step in the project’s approval.

The initiative comes as extractive projects continue to expand in Cameroon, where quarries, industrial mining, and infrastructure developments are raising growing concerns over environmental governance, community compensation, and the monitoring of local impacts.
