Bamenda gas Plant Opens, Promising Steadier Energy Supply and Lower Household Costs

(Business in Cameroon) – The cooking gas filling centre in Bamenda has begun operations, marking a new phase in domestic energy supply for the North West Region. The facility, located in Bangshie, Bamenda I Subdivision, Mezam Division, officially started selling cooking gas on Friday, December 12, 2025, six months after its inauguration. Authorities said the start of operations is expected to stabilise supply chains, reduce transport costs linked to gas distribution, and support regional economic activity by ensuring consistent access to subsidised cooking gas.

The filling centre has a storage capacity of 200 metric tonnes, comprising two tanks of 100 metric tonnes each, and is built on a 6.25-hectare site. It also includes two additional bases reserved for future expansion. The facility features a 12-station filling carousel capable of filling between 600 and 650 gas cylinders per hour. Officials said the centre is designed to serve not only the Mezam Division but the entire North West Region, with distribution extending to surrounding areas through licensed marketers and distributors.

The Director General of the Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilisation Fund, CSPH, Okie Johnson Ndoh, said the project required sustained investment and coordination before becoming operational. “It took us 26 months to put up this structure, and it also took some time to commission it. What I want to tell the people of the North West Region is that gas is available today, at affordable prices, subsidised by the President of the Republic,” he said. Ndoh added that the gas supply is intended for the entire region and urged households to use the product at the regulated price.

Regional and local authorities said the facility will contribute to broader economic development while supporting infrastructure growth around the site. The Governor of the North West Region, Adolphe Lele L’Afrique, called on residents to work with security forces to safeguard the installation and ensure continuity of operations. Bamenda I Council Mayor, Mbigha Felix, welcomed the start of sales, noting that access roads and electricity connections to the site are under development, which will also benefit nearby communities.

The Deputy General Manager of the Cameroon Petroleum Depot Company, SCDP, Gabriel Eteke, said the centre responds to long-standing energy needs in the North West and West Regions by ensuring a regular and reliable domestic gas supply at a fair price. SCDP will manage site filling and logistics, while licensed marketers will handle sales and distribution to retailers and consumers across the region.
