Douala Sets Aside CFA1.8 Billion to Compensate Residents for Wouri Riverside Road

The Douala City Council (CUD) says it has secured CFA1.8 billion to compensate 300 households affected by the Wouri riverside road project.

The announcement was made April 9 during a site visit led by Mayor Roger Mbassa Ndinè. According to city officials, the funds are already available and will be disbursed soon to help clear the right-of-way and move construction forward.

Launched in March 2025, the project is currently underway on a priority 1.5-kilometer stretch linking the Maetur roundabout to Denver. The mayor said this first section is expected to be completed within two months.

A second phase of work is set to follow, with the city aiming to complete the full project by 2027, in line with the 24-month contractual timeline.

The project is financed through a CFA41.4 billion loan from China First Highway Engineering Company (CFHEC), which is also responsible for construction.

Considered a major infrastructure project for Douala, the new road will run along the left bank of the Wouri River, connecting the Deïdo roundabout to the Maetur roundabout in Bonamoussadi. The project is divided into four sections.

Once completed, the road is expected to ease traffic congestion in Douala’s 3rd and 5th districts, where mobility challenges are frequent. City authorities also see it as an alternative route to improve access to the administrative center of Bonanjo and the commercial hub of Akwa.
