Trade Ministry Announces 14% Drop in Beef Prices

(Business in Cameroon) – Cameroonian authorities announced a reduction in beef prices after a meeting yesterday with traders’ associations, butchers’ unions, and the Livestock Development and Exploitation Company. The price of boneless beef will drop from 3,500 CFA francs to 3,000 CFA francs per kilogram, while bone-in beef will fall from 3,000 CFA francs to 2,500 CFA francs. This marks a 14% decrease from prices in effect over the past six months.

The previous price increase was largely driven by a change in abattoir pricing. A fixed slaughtering fee had been replaced by a weight-based charge, which raised costs that were then passed on to consumers.

To maintain the newly lowered prices, the meeting in Yaoundé agreed to restructure the beef supply chain. This will involve creating a beef interprofessional body and installing a weighbridge at the livestock market to standardize pricing for live cattle, according to a statement signed by Trade Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana.
