Douala Spends CFA60bn to Repair 100 km of Roads in 2020-24

(Business in Cameroon) – Between 2020 and 2024, the Douala City Council invested over CFA60 billion from its own budget to repair nearly 100 km of roads. These figures were shared on January 15, 2025, by the city’s mayor, Roger Mbassa Ndinè, during the 4th edition of the annual Douala Municipal Council Meeting, which brings together council members from the city’s six districts. The event is held to review the council’s achievements and outline future goals.

Completed projects include the Bonassama Wharf access road, the route to the onion market near the aviation boulevard pedestrian bridge, and the Japoma Road-Boulevard de l’Unité link, including the Tongo Bassa bridge section, Parcours Vita Road, and nearby areas.

Ongoing projects include work on the Logbessou-Lendi-Bangue Road, road maintenance around the Ngodi Fire Station, and access to the Mbanga-Japoma Fire Center.

According to Mayor Ndinè, these projects, managed by the council and contracted construction companies, are a top priority to improve mobility in Douala, where roads have significantly deteriorated over the past decade. Of the 700 km of paved roads in the city, about 225 km—over 30%—are in poor condition.

The city estimates that CFA180 billion is needed to fully rehabilitate these roads, but its annual budget doesn’t allow for that amount. Instead, since 2022, the focus has been on repairing 125 km of the most critical roads, with a projected cost of CFA80 billion. With one year left in the current council’s term, CFA20 billion is still needed to complete the remaining 25 km.

To address this, the city council has approved a 2025 budget of CFA72 billion, primarily dedicated to road repairs. It also plans to launch its own road maintenance service to ensure long-term upkeep of Douala’s streets.
