(Business in Cameroon) – Douala’s city hall budget is set at CFA72 billion for 2025, balanced between revenues and expenditures. This budget is an increase of CFA8 billion (12.5%) compared to 2024, when it was CFA64 billion.
According to the mayor of Douala, Roger Mbassa Ndine, the funds will cover operating expenses and be allocated to six projects, with two of them being top priorities in 2025. These include the maintenance and rehabilitation of the city’s roads and the purchase of road maintenance equipment.
“We plan to carry out a major program to rehabilitate basic infrastructure through the road and construction operations. This will help us make up for delays caused by procurement processes or issues with contractors on several major projects,” said Mayor Mbassa Ndine.
Of the 700 kilometers of paved roads in Douala, about 225 kilometers (over 30%) are in poor condition, according to the CUD. The city aims to rehabilitate more than 35 kilometers in 2024. Priority will also be given to sanitation, particularly waste collection and transport. The mayor noted that the waste management company Hysacam has been “failing” in its contract with the CUD, with only 40% of its trucks being used to remove waste in the city.
According to the CUD, Douala generates 2,700 tons of household waste daily, which is considered high. Meanwhile, Hysacam reports collecting 1,800 tons per day, or about 70% of the total waste. This leaves 30% of the waste uncollected, contributing to the city’s sanitation problems.
To address this, the mayor plans to equip the Urban Cleanliness Authority (RPU), which began operations last December, with new trucks. He also plans to launch a call for tenders to select a new waste collection operator for the city.
