Douala Airport Starts Major Terminal Upgrade Backed by AFD Financing

(Business in Cameroon) – The detailed preliminary design for the renovation of the passenger terminal at Douala International Airport (RAP-AID) was presented on November 12, 2025, in the economic capital during the 136th board meeting of Aéroports du Cameroun (ADC). The session aimed to outline the technical, architectural, and operational choices of the project before the implementation phase begins.

According to the French consortium TPF/Kardham, the selected project manager, the plan meets international standards while reflecting a Cameroonian cultural dimension. It is built around two major components.

Extension of infrastructure

The first phase covers the expansion of aeronautical pavements, including the construction of a new 36,000 m² aircraft parking area on the west side of Pier B. This component, with an estimated cost of CFA10.4 billion including tax, was awarded in October 2025 to the Chinese contractor CHEC for a 12-month execution period. It is expected to increase parking capacity, improve traffic flow, and strengthen safety operations. This step is essential to support a higher volume of international and regional flights.

The second component involves modernizing the existing terminal and creating new areas. The project includes developing 20,000 m², adding another 10,000 m², installing 10 new check-in counters, renovating 80 % of baggage carousels, and adding two elevators and three ramps for passengers with reduced mobility. The goal is to improve passenger flow, expand commercial space, and optimize the use of contact stands. Work will take place without closing the airport to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Financing

The financing is based on a strategic partnership between the French Development Agency (AFD), which is providing CFA66 billion, and ADC. The total project cost is estimated at CFA95 billion including tax, with CFA75 billion for the works and CFA20 billion in taxes and duties covered by the state. According to Fritz Ntone Ntone, chairman of ADC, the prequalification of companies for the terminal renovation is under way and the agreement with AFD is expected to be signed soon. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with delivery planned for June 2028.

Once completed, Douala Airport is expected to increase its capacity from 1.5 million to 2.5 million passengers per year and reach IATA standard “C.” Its security level will rise to 7, a key requirement for international airlines. The project aims to reposition Douala as a leading hub in Central Africa, capable of supporting Cameroon’s economic growth and strengthening the competitiveness of the Cemac region.
