(Business in Cameroon) – The Chinese company, China First Highway Engineering Co (Cfhec), has won a CFA20 billion contract from the Ministry of Public Works for the construction of 33 kilometers of road in northern Cameroon. This contract follows an emergency international tender launched on April 17, 2024. It is part of the three-year emergency plan (Planut) that began in 2015 to improve the country’s road infrastructure.
The contract covers the construction of the Pont de la Bénoué-Taparé road section, which stretches over 33 kilometers. The official announcement, made on December 4, 2024, states that the project will take 30 months to complete. This is part of a larger 57-kilometer road construction program between Guidjiba and Taparé.
Cfhec, which already has experience in Cameroon’s infrastructure sector, will oversee all aspects of the work. This includes preparation, earthworks, and building the road layers (foundation, base, and pavement). The company will also handle drainage, sanitation, and culverts. Additionally, an 18.4-meter bridge will be built at Wafango. Cfhec is also responsible for road signs, intersections, speed bumps, and meeting environmental standards.
Cfhec is well-established in Cameroon. In October 2024, the company won a direct contract to build 10 kilometers of roads along the Wouri River in Douala. It is also handling the second phase of the Douala-Yaoundé highway, a major project worth nearly CFA880 billion, which follows a first phase completed in 2022 at a cost of nearly CFA350 billion.
