Chad Looks to Cameroon to Strengthen Fuel Storage and Secure Supply Chains

Chad’s National Petroleum Storage Company (STDP) is looking to draw on Cameroon’s experience as it expands its own fuel storage infrastructure.

On February 24, a delegation from STDP’s senior leadership visited the headquarters of the Cameroon Petroleum Storage Company (SCDP) to explore what both sides described as a “sustainable strategic partnership.”

Established in 2018, STDP is preparing to bring its first fuel storage depots online in Djamalaye, about 30 kilometers from N’Djamena. Cameroon’s SCDP has positioned itself as a key partner in that expansion.

“We are proud to contribute to this scaling-up by sharing our expertise,” the Cameroonian public company said.

SCDP’s director general, Véronique Moampea Mbio, said the company would support STDP’s development. “We have know-how that will be beneficial to STDP,” she said.

Discussions focused on operational standards, safety systems, and best practices in fuel depot management — areas where SCDP says it has built strong expertise over decades.

A National Network as a Model

SCDP points to its long-standing experience. Created in July 1979, the company was tasked with ensuring nationwide availability of petroleum products and supporting economic development. It describes itself as the first and only company responsible for petroleum storage and distribution at the national level in Cameroon.

Today, SCDP operates a network of 13 depots across seven regions. As of 2022, the company — owned by state entities including SNH, PAD, SHI, and CSHP, as well as the Ministry of Water and Energy — reported storage capacity of 242,000 cubic meters for liquid petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, and kerosene) and 3,970 metric tons for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Beyond technical cooperation, the initiative highlights the growing role of regional public operators in securing petroleum supply chains. At a time when storage capacity and safety standards are increasingly tied to national energy sovereignty, cross-border partnerships are emerging as a strategic tool.
