(Business in Cameroon) – In 2024, Cameroon accounted for 42.1% of the nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of the six countries in the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC). This marks a 1 percentage point increase from 2023, according to the 2024 annual report from the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), the region’s central bank.
Cameroon’s economic weight is now nearly 2.5 times that of Gabon, the second-largest economy in the sub-region. Gabon contributed 17.1% to CEMAC’s nominal GDP in 2024, a slight increase of 0.1 percentage point from the previous year.
Chad ranked third in 2024 with a stable share of 15.4%. Congo followed, maintaining its contribution at 12.9%, almost unchanged from 13% in 2023.
Equatorial Guinea saw its share decline from 11.2% in 2023 to 10.4% in 2024. The Central African Republic also experienced a drop, contributing 2.1% in 2024 compared to 2.3% the year before.
These figures from BEAC reflect Cameroon’s increasing role as the economic engine of the CEMAC region.
