(Business in Cameroon) – The city of Ebolowa in South Cameroon is set to host a new domestic gas storage and filling center, a project led by the Hydrocarbon Prices Stabilization Fund (CSPH). The center will cost an estimated CFA 6.4 billion. CSPH has already invited bids from seven preselected companies to start work on the facility.
Meanwhile, CSPH expects to complete another gas filling center in Bamenda, Northwest Cameroon, before the end of 2024. This announcement came during a site visit on February 16, 2024, by the CSPH Director General, Okié Johnson Ndoh.
The new facilities aim to ensure easier access to affordable domestic gas across the country. Currently, despite the official price of CFA 6,500 for a 12kg bottle of domestic gas, households in remote areas often pay as much as CFA 10,000 due to transportation costs. These centers will reduce such disparities by shortening the supply chain.
Expanding domestic gas use can help combat environmental degradation. In Northern Cameroon, the reliance on firewood contributes to desertification, while in the South, it drives deforestation. According to the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife, charcoal sales alone generate CFA 17 billion annually in Cameroon, highlighting the widespread dependence on wood fuel.
