Cameroonian President Paul Biya ratified a bilateral air transport agreement between Cameroon and Qatar by decree issued on Jan. 29, 2026. The deal was signed on Jan. 16, 2025, in Doha. The agreement provides a legal framework allowing Qatar Airways to operate in Cameroon, marking an important step in expanding the country’s air connectivity.
The ratification follows the National Assembly’s adoption of a law in December 2025 authorizing the head of state to validate the agreement. The objective is to create a legal framework conducive to the arrival of international operators. Other aims include expanding the flight network and strengthening connections to the Middle East and Asia. The deal is also expected to have an impact on competition and passenger fares.
Beyond passenger services, the government expects effects on trade and strategic partnerships, notably through the transfer of expertise to Camair-Co. Authorities also anticipate an increase in the number of foreign airlines operating in Cameroon. Additional tax and fee revenues are expected, along with increased activity for the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) and the Airports of Cameroon (ADC).
Airports in Douala and Yaounde are the first concerned. Higher flows of passengers and freight are expected, alongside a boost in their attractiveness to tourists and investors. Qatar Airways, which serves more than 170 destinations, is seen as a way to provide Cameroon with broader access to international markets and greater visibility abroad.
