Cameroon Plans Feasibility Studies for New International Airport in Douala

(Business in Cameroon) – In 2026, the government of Cameroon plans to launch feasibility studies for a new airport. The announcement was made on 28 November at the National Assembly by the Minister of Transport, who presented his department’s budget for the coming year.

For the air transport development and civil aviation regulation program, the ministry is requesting CFA1.2 billion, including CFA628 million in investments and CFA611 million for operating costs. As part of this program, the Transport Minister plans “feasibility studies for the construction of a world-class airport in the Douala metropolitan area.”

This position brings back into focus a project that has remained dormant in the administration for years. It initially called for a major airport spanning the cities of Douala, Édea, and Kribi on Cameroon’s coast.

The facility is intended to align the country with international airport infrastructure standards and address shortcomings at the two existing international airports, Douala and Yaoundé, which are only about 230 km apart.

Alongside this long-term plan, the government has begun renovation works at Douala International Airport. The CFA95 billion program is currently underway.

The works include extending aviation pavements with a new 36,000-m² aircraft parking area on the west side of jetty B. They also involve modernizing the existing terminal and creating new spaces for passengers and services.

For 2026, the government also plans to conduct technical studies for the rehabilitation of the Bertoua, Kribi, and Tiko airports. The start of these studies was initially planned for 2024 before being postponed.
