Cameroon Partners with Japan to Provide Equipment for Kribi Fishermen

(Business in Cameroon) – Japan provided fishermen in Kribi with two batches of much-needed equipment on September 6, 2024. During the handover, Dr. Taïga, Cameroon’s Minister of Fisheries, expressed his gratitude. “We’re here to congratulate you for your hard work. These supplies, made possible by both the government and our Japanese partners, will help solve equipment challenges and create better conditions for fishing here in the Ocean department and across Cameroon.” He was joined by a representative from the Japanese Embassy.

The Japanese donation, worth around CFA500 million, included a pick-up truck, around 40 outboard motors, and ice production machines to support the fishermen’s work. Cameroon’s government also pitched in, providing around 50 fishing boats, over 200 fish display bins, paddles, and other gear, though the total cost of the local contribution wasn’t revealed.

Kribi, located in the Ocean department, plays a vital role in Cameroon’s fishing industry. The fresh fish and shrimp caught in the nearby Atlantic waters are regularly shipped to the capital, Yaoundé, through well-organized distribution systems that keep the seafood flowing to market.
