(Business in Cameroon) – In May 2024, consumer prices rose again by 4.5% compared to the same period in 2023. The National Institute of Statistics (INS) reported that this increase is even more significant over the last 12 months, reaching 6.1% by the end of May 2024.
“Following the origin of products, inflation is largely driven by internal factors. Prices of local products increased by 6.5%, while those of imported goods rose by only 4.7% over the same period,” INS analysts highlighted.
As in April, Ngaoundéré, the capital of the Adamaoua region, saw the highest price increases in May 2024. In contrast, Bamenda, the capital of the North-West region, experienced the least inflationary pressures despite the ongoing socio-political crisis since late 2016.
