(Business in Cameroon) – Ministers of Finance and Decentralization and Local Development announced on Thursday the launch of a grassroots awareness campaign to introduce the new General Synthetic Tax (IGS) to businesses across the country.
The campaign will involve joint teams from the General Directorate of Taxes and agents from Decentralized Territorial Communities (CTDs) touring all 10 regions of Cameroon. According to a joint statement, the initiative has three primary objectives: to provide technical assistance to taxpayers in filing and submitting their IGS declarations; to help users better understand the procedures for declaring and paying local taxes; and to foster closer collaboration between tax authorities, CTDs, and economic operators through a grassroots public service approach.
This outreach effort is part of a broader national campaign launched on March 27, 2025, aimed at raising awareness about local taxation laws. The campaign is coordinated by the local offices of the Ministries of Finance and Decentralization and Local Development.
The introduction of the IGS marks a significant reform under Cameroon’s local taxation law, which was enacted by presidential decree on March 23, 2024, following parliamentary approval. The IGS applies to businesses with annual revenues under 50 million CFA francs and replaces the previous flat-rate tax and simplified taxation system.
The Cameroonian government projects that the new tax will generate an additional 50 billion CFA francs annually, directly benefiting the Decentralized Territorial Communities.
