Cameroon Chamber of Agriculture expands cocoa storage capacity at Douala port

The Cameroon Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock, and Forests (Capef) is building two warehouses totaling 2,000 sq meters in the area of the port of Douala to improve cocoa storage and export operations. The investment amount has not been disclosed. Construction began in 2025, with the first 1,000-sq-meter warehouse completed at the end of 2025 and already operational, having received its first shipments in early 2026.

The second warehouse, also covering 1,000 sq meters, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in July 2026. Once both facilities are delivered, the site will offer total storage capacity of about 11,000 tons of cocoa. The project also includes a 4,500-sq-meter outdoor area dedicated to container logistics and the unloading of trucks arriving from production zones.

A source within Capef said the infrastructure will make it possible to handle close to 100,000 tons per season, supported by a rapid stock rotation of about two weeks. The investment forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Cameroon’s agricultural logistics chain.

The project comes as cocoa consolidates its position as the country’s top export product. During the 2024-2025 season, Cameroon exported 192,013 tons of cocoa, up 6,400 tons year on year, generating CFA732.2 billion in revenue. Cocoa accounted for 42.94% of the CFA1,705.4 billion in export earnings recorded in the first half of 2025, according to the latest economic outlook note from the Ministry of Finance.

The momentum has been driven by rising global prices. Cocoa prices climbed 147.7% in 2024, reflecting tighter global supply linked to adverse weather conditions in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. For Capef, the objective is to capitalize on this environment by upgrading logistics capacity, with the dual aim of reducing post-harvest losses and improving the competitiveness of Cameroonian cocoa on export markets.
