Cameroon Allocates 10 Hectares for Afreximbank-Backed Medical Centre of Excellence and Housing Complex

Cameroon has advanced plans to develop a health and urban infrastructure hub following the signing, on March 26, 2026, of a convention between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (MINHDU) and the Urban and Rural Land Development Equipment Authority (MAETUR). The agreement covers the allocation and development of a 10-hectare site along the Yaoundé-Nsimalen motorway to host the future African Medical Centre of Excellence and an associated real estate complex.

The convention, signed by representatives of MINHDU and MAETUR in the presence of Afreximbank President Dr George Elombi, formalises roles in land provision and site development. It establishes the operational framework for implementation, including land servicing and infrastructure preparation. MAETUR will provide the 10-hectare parcel and oversee site preparation, while the project will combine the medical centre, promoted by Afreximbank, with a complementary real estate development to support its operations.

The signing ceremony, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Yaoundé, was presided over by the Prime Minister and attended by senior officials, including the Minister of State Property, Surveys and Land Tenure and the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to MINHDU, the project is part of efforts to modernise healthcare infrastructure while addressing urban development challenges, reflecting an integrated approach combining health investment with planned urban expansion. The initiative also aligns with directives aimed at reducing the housing deficit and improving access to modern urban services. It supports the development of structured urban zones along key transport corridors, particularly the Yaoundé bypass, identified as a strategic growth axis.

The project is embedded in a broader plan to structure new growth poles around Yaoundé, with the Yaoundé-Nsimalen corridor identified as a priority zone for mixed-use development combining housing, public services and economic infrastructure. Beyond healthcare, the medical centre and its associated real estate complex are expected to contribute to job creation, land value enhancement and improved urban organisation, through the integration of housing, healthcare services and supporting infrastructure into functional urban clusters aligned with national planning objectives.
