BEAC Boosts Liquidity Offer to CFA320bn as Banks Show Signs of Strain

(Business in Cameroon) – On November 5, 2024, the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), which serves the six countries of the CEMAC region, injected CFA320 billion into commercial banks. This amount is CFA80 billion more than the CFA240 billion offered to banks during an operation on October 29, 2024.

According to the central bank’s data, the demand from credit institutions during the October operation did not exceed CFA204 billion. This suggests that the central bank has increased its liquidity offer to banks, as they seem to be struggling to fully absorb the funds being provided.

When the BEAC resumed liquidity injections in June 2024, after a suspension of more than a year, banks quickly showed a strong demand for these funds, often requesting up to CFA500 billion per week. This surge in demand led the BEAC to gradually raise the amount offered to credit institutions. The amount initially stood at CFA50 billion in June and rose to CFA350 billion by mid-October 2024, before starting to decrease. Following a reduction to CFA240 billion at the end of October, the offer was once again increased to CFA320 billion.
