Political figures from both the opposition and ruling camp gathered at the Akwa Banquet Hall in Douala on Thursday to pay tribute to the late nationalist leader Anicet Ekane. The memorial, however, was later overshadowed by a dispute over alleged representation of MANIDEM.
The controversy emerged after individuals wearing MANIDEM insignia appeared at the ceremony. The party’s national executive swiftly distanced itself from their presence, describing the display of its symbols as unauthorised in a statement issued on May 8.
The gathering marked the second day of tributes following initial commemorations on May 6. A condolence book was opened in honour of Ekane, national president of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM). The hall was decorated with his portraits, while solemn music accompanied reflections on his decades of political activism.
Participants included members of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), the Cameroon National Salvation Front, ( FSNC) the Alliance des Forces Progressistes, ( AFP) and other political actors who came to honour his legacy.
CPDM Member of Parliament Samuel Dieudonné Moth described Ekane as a committed nationalist and “a great negotiator for peace,” praising his consistency and calm voice in public debate. Célestin Djamen of APAR and AFP president Sam Baka also highlighted his role in promoting dialogue and consensus among divided political actors.
MANIDEM executive, however, said some individuals had ignored internal directives and misrepresented the party at the event. It identified local officials from Dibombari and a party advisor among those involved, announcing disciplinary measures including exclusion from party structures and indicating possible legal action over the use of its identity and symbols.
Ekane’s eldest son, Muna Ekane, has earlier said his father belonged to the Cameroonian people and not to any political faction.
A cultural night was held on Friday in honour of the late politician. Anicet Ekane is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday in Bomono Gare
