Fuel Transport by Road Surges in Cameroon, but Rail Still Leads

Road transport of petroleum products in Cameroon saw a sharp increase in March, reflecting renewed activity across the country’s fuel logistics chain.

According to data from the Groupement des transporteurs terrestres du Cameroun (GTTC), volumes of refined petroleum products—mainly fuel—moved by road rose from 50,222 cubic meters in February to 58,967 cubic meters in March, a 14.8% increase.

The GTTC said the uptick points to stronger momentum in the sector. It attributes the growth to rising confidence among operators in road transport, as well as heavier reliance by fuel marketers on trucking to supply inland depots. The increase was also supported by the availability of a sufficiently large fleet of tanker trucks.

Despite this surge, road transport has not overtaken rail, which remains the primary channel for moving petroleum products inland. The GTTC noted that Camrail also improved its performance over the same period.

Volumes transported by rail climbed from 72,942 cubic meters in February to 81,719 cubic meters in March. The group said this increase was driven by the introduction of new locomotives, which have boosted hauling capacity toward the hinterland.

Over the full year 2025, Camrail reported transporting more than 778,000 tons of hydrocarbons, up from over 745,000 tons in 2024, marking a 4% year-on-year increase.
