Cameroon targets June 2026 to finish CFA30.4bn airport security upgrades

The Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA), the national air transport regulator, says work on the airport component of the Transport Sector Development Project (PDST) is expected to be completed in June 2026. Meeting in Douala on December 29, 2025, the project steering and monitoring committee assessed the execution rate at 98%, the CCAA said.

The program aims to strengthen safety and security at the international airports of Yaoundé, Douala, Garoua, and Maroua, as part of a broader effort to improve transport infrastructure. The PDST also includes a road component.

At this stage, around 10 projects are presented as completed. At Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport, these include development of the bypass road, construction of the Emergency Operations Control Center (CDOU), low-cost paving of the patrol road, and reinforcement of the security fence.

The CCAA also cites rehabilitation of the security fence at Douala International Airport, procurement of communications equipment, and installation of a data center within the CDOU facilities in Douala and Yaoundé. It adds that several works have also been carried out at the airports of Garoua and Maroua-Salak.

Other works remain under way. They include construction of the patrol road on the general aviation side at Douala airport, completion of the CDOU facilities in Garoua and Maroua, and expansion of video surveillance at the airports of Douala and Yaoundé.

Launched in September 2017 with a total budget of CFA30.4 billion, the airport component of the PDST was initially due to end in 2024. Completion was pushed back several times due to delays, disputes, and adjustments needed to ensure compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

The CCAA says the June 2026 deadline is meant to complete all works at the targeted airports. The PDST is financed at nearly CFA113 billion by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) through a loan contracted by Cameroon in April 2017. The project has two components: a road component for construction of the Babadjou-Bamenda road, and an airport component focused on strengthening safety and security at the international airports of Yaoundé, Douala, Garoua, and Maroua.
