(Business in Cameroon) – The Yaoundé Urban Community (CUY) has awarded two oversight contracts for household waste management for the period 2025-2030. The contracts followed a restricted national tender launched under an emergency procedure on Jan. 16, 2025, to oversee waste collection, transport, street sweeping, and the cleaning of public spaces in the capital.
The first contract, valued at 1.907 billion CFA francs, was awarded to the ERA/CERIDD consortium, according to published results. The second, worth 1.904 billion CFA francs, went to Creaconsult. Both contracts run for five years. The CUY said the two firms will be responsible for technical oversight and quality control of waste management operations.
These appointments finalize the contractual framework designed to improve waste management in the capital. In June 2024, the CUY renewed its contract with Hygiène et Salubrité du Cameroun (Hysacam) following an international tender launched under an emergency procedure. Hysacam won three of the four lots, totaling more than 45 billion CFA francs. The fourth lot, worth over 16 billion CFA francs and initially declared void, was later awarded by direct agreement to Thychlof Sarl, which now handles waste collection in the 3rd and 6th districts.
These new contract awards come amid a persistent waste management crisis in Yaoundé. The city continues to struggle with mounting garbage, a problem driven by population growth, poor waste disposal habits, and inadequate funding. Despite the National Forum on Urban Waste Management held in May 2025, illegal dumpsites and unsanitary conditions remain widespread across several neighborhoods.
