Hysacam adds eight new trucks to boost waste collection in Douala

(Business in Cameroon) – On October 3, 2025, Hygiène et Salubrité du Cameroun (Hysacam) presented eight new waste collection trucks to the mayor of Douala as part of its ongoing fleet renewal program. The CFA5 billion investment, financed with support from Afriland First Bank, is part of a broader plan to acquire 80 trucks in total.

This delivery marks the second phase of the program, following the reception of ten trucks in April in Yaoundé. According to Hysacam’s Managing Director, Jean Pierre Ymele, some of the new “ville de Paris” and “entrepreneur” model trucks will be assigned to the Youpwe waste transfer center, while others will operate within neighborhoods to clear up waste piles. The company aims to restore cleanliness across Douala by October 7, describing it as a “sign of hope” for the city.

While awaiting the remaining 60 trucks in the coming months, Hysacam has also announced plans to order 300 additional trucks from CFAO to be deployed nationwide. Douala’s mayor, Roger Mbassa Ndine, hailed the initiative as a timely and sustainable move to restore the economic capital’s clean and attractive image.

These acquisitions are expected to enhance Hysacam’s operational capacity at a time when Douala faces a major waste management crisis. With around 2,700 tons of waste produced daily, only 40% of Hysacam’s trucks are currently operational, limiting collection efficiency. In response to this shortfall, the Douala Urban Community (CUD) recently announced the selection of a new operator to compete with Hysacam.
