Douala Airport Nets Record Cocaine Haul Worth Nearly CFA9 Billion

  • (Business in Cameroon) – Cameroon customs seized 200 kg of cocaine hidden in plastic drums at Douala airport.

  • The drugs, valued at around CFA9 billion, were stored for a month in an ADC warehouse.

  • Enhanced anti-trafficking units and intelligence sharing helped secure this largest-ever seizure.

On July 18, Cameroonian customs officials made their largest-ever cocaine seizure at Douala International Airport, intercepting about 200 kilograms of the drug. Officials valued the shipment at roughly CFA9 billion.

Customs reported that traffickers hid the cocaine inside plastic drums shipped from a European country. The drums sat in an Cameroon Airports (ADC) warehouse for about a month without collection, raising suspicion among customs officers who launched an investigation.

The seizure reflects intensified efforts by Cameroon’s government to curb illicit goods in airports. Since 2016, authorities have reported rising drug busts at both Douala and Yaoundé-Nsimalen airports.

This success stems partly from the gradual deployment of airport anti-trafficking units (CAATs). These specialized teams collect and share real-time intelligence among connected airports, conduct thorough screenings of passengers, baggage, cargo, and mail, and perform risk assessments to block illegal trafficking.
