(Business in Cameroon) – The Yaoundé Conference Center is hosting the 8th Wood and Furniture Fair from June 24 to July 8, 2025, as Cameroon pushes to grow its local wood processing sector.
The fair, held under the theme “Local Wood Processing: Challenges, Issues, and Financing Opportunities for Developing a Competitive Furniture Industry,” highlights Cameroon’s efforts to add value to its forest resources and build a stronger domestic furniture industry.
Organizers aim to promote local processing and support the growth of artisanal businesses.
“The primary goal is to showcase artisans and the work done with our wood. But we also want to strengthen skills through practical training,” said Hélène Mapoko, chair of the organizing committee.
Training Targets Youth Employment
This year’s event introduces training workshops for young people interested in woodworking and related trades. Organizers hope to attract new talent and support job creation in a growing sector.
“Those who want to discover woodworking can try it out during the fair,” Mapoko told CRTV. “We will also have participation from an Italian specialist company that will train carpenters in the use of water-based varnishes, an innovative and environmentally friendly product.”
Cameroon currently has 160 wood processing units, which generate nearly 25,000 direct jobs. Government officials and industry leaders aim to better structure this growing sector. With increasing restrictions on raw wood exports, boosting local processing has become a top strategic goal.
The Wood and Furniture Fair serves as both a showcase for local talent and a platform to rethink and reshape an industry in fast evolution.
