(Business in Cameroon) – French retail giant Carrefour, part of the CFAO Retail group in Cameroon, reported that out of the 15,000 items currently available on its shelves, 3,500 are made in Cameroon.
That means food items made locally now account for 40% of Carrefour’s grocery range. The retailer shared this on the sidelines of its “Made in Cameroon Fortnight,” a campaign running from May 8 to May 21 across its Cameroonian stores. Overall, these locally produced goods make up around 23% of Carrefour’s total product offering.
CFAO Retail Cameroon also reports that it works closely with 300 local producers. These partners represent 75% of its supplier base. According to the company, local products generate 45% of its food sales and account for 75% of the volume sold in that category.
Despite these numbers, CFAO Consumer’s managing director in Cameroon, Philippe Marcillon, has chosen not to reveal the company’s total revenue in the country.
However, some figures give a glimpse into its business. Carrefour stores in Cameroon process 15,000 receipts per day across all locations. This reflects around 30,000 daily visits, according to Cyndi Noumbou, who oversees quality at Carrefour.
CFAO operates four shopping centers in Cameroon, two in Yaoundé and two in Douala. Carrefour itself runs one hypermarket and one supermarket in Yaoundé, along with five supermarkets in Douala. The French group is active in 47 African countries and reports a global turnover of €6 billion.
