(Business in Cameroon) – Camrail, Cameroon’s railway operator since 1999, announced on April 1 that it is working to obtain repair certifications from German manufacturer Knorr-Bremse. Once approved, the company’s teams will be able to service Knorr-Bremse components directly at its Bassa workshops in Douala.
“These certifications, like those we have with other manufacturers, will allow us to repair Knorr-Bremse parts in-house, strengthening our position as a key railway maintenance hub,” Camrail stated.
While waiting for approval, the Africa Global Logistics (AGL) subsidiary continues to send components to Knorr-Bremse for servicing, in line with the manufacturer’s strict policies. “Knorr-Bremse requires that all its components be repaired exclusively by its own facilities,” Camrail explained. As part of this arrangement, the company shipped 24 brake blocks to Knorr-Bremse’s South African branch for repairs on April 1.
“The refurbishment of these brake blocks will help reinforce our reserve stock and improve equipment availability by cutting down wait times, in line with the ‘just-in-time’ maintenance approach we now apply,” the railway operator added.
Camrail says it has carried out more than 520 maintenance operations as part of its broader upkeep strategy. These include preventive servicing for locomotives and railcars. For locomotives, this covers major overhauls, limited inspections, refurbishments, intermediate checks, and full inspections. For railcars, maintenance includes general and limited overhauls, safety inspections, and security checks.
