(Business in Cameroon) – The South African telecom group MTN has announced a leadership change at its Cameroon subsidiary. Wanda Matandela will succeed Mitwa Ng’ambi as CEO of MTN Cameroon, taking office in March 2025. Matandela previously served on the boards of Supersonic (Pty) and MTN Rwanda and was the Chief Commercial Officer for MTN South Africa.
He joined MTN in 2018 as Chief Enterprise Business Officer, where he led the turnaround of the enterprise business unit. “with more than 20 years of experience, including 13 years in telecoms, as well as holding strategic roles in the fast-moving consumer goods and financial services sectors,” MTN stated in its announcement.
The company’s leadership expressed confidence in his abilities, highlighting that his strong commercial expertise and stakeholder management skills would build on the momentum created under Mitwa Ng’ambi. They emphasized that his new approach and vision would help accelerate growth in Cameroon.
In Cameroon, Wanda Matandela’s priorities will include improving service quality—an ongoing demand from government authorities and customers. His main challenge will be managing the company’s upcoming investments, particularly the expansion and strengthening of its network. MTN has allocated nearly CFA62 billion ($100 million) for these efforts in 2025, which marks the first phase of a larger three-year investment program valued at CFA187 billion ($300 million).
The leadership shuffle stems from the early retirement of Djibril Ouattara, CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire. Mitwa Ng’ambi, the current head of MTN Cameroon, will move to replace Ouattara.
As MTN Cameroon prepares to celebrate 25 years of operations in the country next year, it remains a key player in the development of telecommunications. The company provides mobile financial services and electronic communications to nearly 13 million people. MTN also claims to have created 1,000 direct jobs and supports an extensive network of over 100,000 agents across all regions of Cameroon.
Over the past decade, MTN Cameroon has contributed CFA1,062 billion ($1.7 billion) to state revenues and invested more than CFA540 billion ($870 million) in modernizing and strengthening its network infrastructure.
