(Business in Cameroon) – As of December 31, 2023, the Central African States Development Bank (BDEAC) reported that it had disbursed over CFA 709 billion in loans to both businesses and governments within the CEMAC region. According to the bank’s 2023 report, CFA 338.7 billion, or 47.8% of the total loans, went to transportation projects, including road construction across the CEMAC countries.
“The transportation sector is the main beneficiary of our financing, accounting for 47.8% of total loans. It is followed by the industry at 10.6% and health at 8%,” the BDEAC stated in its annual report. This allocation aligns with the bank’s strategic mission as outlined in its 2023-2027 strategic plan, “Azobe,” focusing on specific development axes.
In 2023 alone, funding for transportation projects significantly increased. Official figures indicate that out of CFA 273.4 billion lent to project developers, more than CFA 190 billion approximately 69.8% of the total—was allocated to transportation. “During the 2023 fiscal year, the bank funded several key projects in the health and transportation sectors. These investments align with the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations,” noted the regional development bank.
