Eneo Boosts Investment Budget to CFA53bn for 2024, up 58%

(Business in Cameroon) – Eneo, the electricity service provider in Cameroon, announced it will implement an investment budget of CFA53 billion for 2024. This amount represents a 58% increase from the CFA33.3 billion budgeted for 2023. The company, controlled by British investment fund Actis, shared this information in its latest newsletter about electrical services in Cameroon.

“Despite internal and external factors that increase vulnerability, the board has chosen to pursue an aggressive investment policy,” Eneo explained. The company plans to launch 133 projects in 2024, focusing on areas such as production, improving distribution quality, modernizing commercial equipment, and strengthening IT infrastructure.

By the end of June 2024, Eneo reported that teams had committed 35.6% of the operational budget. In addition to starting some network expansion projects and modernizing metering equipment, the company highlighted the launch of the Guider and Maroua solar park expansion project, which will add 30 MW in collaboration with partner Scatec. Eneo is also monitoring the completion of several other projects initiated in previous years, totaling 555 projects.

However, despite these efforts, power distribution disruptions continue in Cameroon due to several factors. One major issue is the ongoing production deficits, often linked to the shutdown of the Kribi gas plant, whose owner, Globeleq, is demanding unpaid debts from Eneo. Additionally, low water levels in the Ntem River, which hosts the Memvé’élé plant (211 MW), contribute to the challenges. There are also increasing incidents on the transmission and distribution networks, leading to frequent power outages.
