Cameroon’s Permanent Jobs Increase in 2023, Boosted by Primary and Tertiary Sectors

(Business in Cameroon) – The number of permanent jobs in companies based in Cameroon grew by 0.9% in 2023, according to a report by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on the “Economic and Financial Situation of Businesses in 2023.” However, this growth rate marks a slowdown compared to 2022, when permanent jobs increased by 2.8% as businesses recovered to pre-pandemic levels.

While the overall job growth in 2023 was modest, it was mainly driven by the primary and tertiary sectors. In contrast, the secondary sector saw a slight decline in permanent jobs, dropping by 0.14%, according to the official data.

The primary sector showed the strongest job growth, with permanent employment increasing by 4.9% in 2023, following a 1.4% rise in 2021 and a 1.1% decline in 2022.

In the tertiary sector, permanent jobs increased by 0.4% in 2023. This is a notable drop from the 5.8% growth recorded in 2022.

The secondary sector experienced the weakest performance in terms of permanent job creation since 2021. After a 4.2% increase in 2021 and a 0.9% growth in 2022, the sector recorded a 0.19% job loss in 2023.
