CDBM’s Surge Softens 11.6% Decline in Cameroon’s June 2024 Banana Exports

(Business in Cameroon) – Cameroon exported 14,042 tons of bananas in June this year, marking a decline of 11.6% compared to the 15,670 tons exported in June 2023. According to the Cameroon Banana Association (Assobacam), this downturn results from decreased shipments to the international market by three of the four active producers in the country.

Plantations du Haut Penja (PHP), a subsidiary of Compagnie Fruitière de Marseille, saw its exports fall by 1,936 tons, from 11,947 tons in June 2023 to 10,011 tons in June 2024. The state-owned agro-industrial company CDC also experienced a decline, with exports dropping by 155 tons year-on-year, from 2,617 tons to 2,462 tons. Boh Plantations Plc reported a decrease of 526 tons, with exports falling from 1,060 tons in June 2023 to just 534 tons in June 2024.

However, the overall decline in Cameroon’s banana exports in June 2024 was mitigated by the impressive performance of the Compagnie des Bananes de Mondoni (CDBM). Controlled by the French group Compagnie Fruitière, CDBM entered the market modestly in June 2023, exporting 46 tons of bananas. One year later, it achieved international sales of 1,035 tons, a remarkable increase of 95.5%. This surge has positioned CDBM as the third-largest banana producer in Cameroon for the second consecutive month, surpassing Boh Plantations Plc.
